Music

Music.

Music is a form of expression, through vibrations. It is also a way of entertainment, that gets together with sounds that people like and find really cool to dance to. But is much more than mere entertainment. It has been a feature of every known human society, anthropologists and sociologists have yet to find a single culture throughout the course of human history that has not had music. In fact, many evolutionary psychologists today make the argument that music predated language.

The music in the 1990s, saw the continuation of teen pop and dance-pop trends which had emerged in the 1970s and 1980s. Further, hip hop grew and continued to be highly successful in the decade, with the continuation of the genre's golden era. Aside from rapreggaecontemporary R&B and urban music in general remained extremely popular throughout the decade; urban music in the late-1980s and 1990s often blended with styles such as soulfunk and jazz, resulting in blended genres such as hip hop soul and g-funk which were popular.

In the Dominican Republic, we have the Merengue, that is our native genre, this is our most influenced genre in our country, by the actual definition it says that Merengue was "first mentioned around the middle of the 19th century and has locally been very popular since then. The genre was later promoted even more by Rafael Trujillo, the dictator from 1930 to 1961, who turned it into the country's national music and dance style."

We also have others genres, like Bachata, Mangulina, Palo, Dominican Son, Atabales and Típico. They're not as famous as the Merengue, but they are very recognized. We also have another type of music, this one is known as dembow, but this, mostly, is heard within our country. But this genre, have impacted in the USA. How? You may ask, as we know, Dominicans are the only ones that hear this type of music, but when they travel, they take the music with them, so some Americans like the rhythm of this kind of music.

The country has seen the rise of popular styles that have had a significant influence on global culture, including ragtimebluesjazzswingrockbluegrasscountryR&Bdoo wopgospelsoulfunkheavy metalpunkdiscohousetechnosalsagrunge and hip hop.
